Final Standings for WHAFL 12

After some discussion with the Commissioner, it was
decided to hold a three game series to determine the Baker Division
Pennant winner. Each tied team would face each other for a winner
take all series. In the event of a tie, the Spencer (a round robin
tournament) Rules were chosen to be the tie breaker. As it turned
out, no tie breakers would be needed.

Standings After September

Hold the Presses, the season ain't
over yet!
In the closest division race ever, three teams arrive at the summit
at the some time.
Wild and crazy end to the WHAFL season! Labor unrest. Teams wilt
under the spotlight. Teams put up big wins when needed. Friends
betray friends! Sons sabotage fathers! A Russian novelist couldn't
write a story with as much tragedy and Hollywood could never dream
up this much drama. Sioux City had its season in hand. All the
Sox had to do was play .500 ball and coast into the post season.
They were unable to do so and were quickly struggling for their
season, ending the month by winning only six games to losing sixteen.
The Sox had a flaw in their strategy: they drafted too many players
from the 94 strike season. Five starting players, including team
starting ERA leader David Cone, walked off the team at the start
of the month. Undaunted, they signed five new starters and promptly
went into a five game losing streak. The Killer Clowns turned
Sox killers by taking three and the Vermin, after taking a series
off, started their run to the top by taking two of three from
the Sox. Vermillion, streaking from outta left field to bust into
the post season picture, posted a 12 and 7 record for the month.
Dyersville, following their example, had a record of 13 and 9
to end the season. The final series of the month featured the
Sox at Vermillion with both teams tided at the top. The Dreams
were just a single game back and faced Killer Clowns, who owned
the league's worst record. The Sox and Vermin split their series
and the Dreams won three against the Clowns, who proved unable
to be Dream killers. After the smoke cleared and the dust settled,
we had an unprecedented three-way tie at the top of the Baker
Division. In the Teacher Division, Mudville had a month as inversely
bad as the previous month was good, posting a 7 and 15 record
in September. Owners of the league's best record, the Nine also
only needed to coast to the post season. Like the Sox, they had
too much flair for the dramatic to go out as quietly as that and
went so far as to dip back into a tie for the lead with the Swedes
before the final series of the month. With four games to play,
there was a tie at the top of the Baker Division and with only
two games to play there was a tie at the top of both the Baker
Division and Teacher Division. The Swedes were playing the Cornwolves
and the Nine were playing the Bad Boys. Unlike the Swedes, whose
post season hopes were crushed by the Wolves, the Nine won their
last two games and clinched the Teacher Division title outright.
Now all that remains is to figure out a way to settle the Baker
Division.
Standings After August

Not much change at the top of the Baker Division-the
Sox stay the course during August. They lost a little ground in
percentage but held on to first place. Sioux City had the opportunity
to drive the final nail in the coffin of Dyersville, meeting them
eight times in August, but failed to do so. Dyersville won five
of those eight games, but it wasn't enough to overcome their eight
and a half game deficit. Vermillion climbed to over .500, but
like Dyersville, will need a strong finish to close with the Sox.
Mudville's Nine stormed into the lead of the Teacher Division
with a 20-7 rampage through the month. The Nine swept the Dreams
before taking three of four from the Silver Sox in a battle of
division leaders. Later, the Nine and the Swedes met for an epic
nine games, with the Nine taking six games. The Swedes struggled
through the month, amassing a 11-17 record. Has the Swedes league
worst hitting and losing record against division rivals finally
caught up with them? They are convinced "pitching and defense
win championships" but they do have some ground to make up.
In other news, Iowa City pulled their record above .500 and the
Did Its, losing in spite of their awesome offense, took three
games out of four from their dreaded rivals-the Swedes, to post
a moral victory.
The stretch run has three teams within striking distance of their
division's lead, but they will need a super month and plenty of
help to capture that flag. The race for the Governor's Cup is
in the Nine's hands.
Standings After July

The Dreams slam into a wall during July-Baker Division
lead changes hands. The Silver Sox, riding an early 3 to 1 series
victory over the Dreams, powered their way into first place of
the Baker Division. The Dreams slumped heavily this month, winning
only nine games. The Corkers also lost ground on first place falling
past the Vermin into forth.
The Swedes continue to lead the Teacher Division, but the Nine
are not giving up, continuing to hold close. The Did Its are also
within striking distance. The Cornwolves have improved their place
in the standings, but at ten games back, will need alot of help.
As the stretch run approaches, the race for the Governor's Cup
is now a dead heat between the Swedes and Silver Sox.
Standings After June

Not much change in the Baker Division-the teams lined
up in the same order as they were after May, but the Dreams and
the Sox are putting some space between themselves and the rest
of the pack. The Dreams went on a 9 and 1 run to start the month,
and had a lead of as many as six games at one time, but the Sox
closed hard and the gap is but a single game at months end. All
the teams in the division showed some loses in winning percentage,
except the Clowns, with the Vermin and Corkers losing the most.
The Swedes have been striving on and were able to
expand their lead. They never had a lead smaller than 2.5 games
over the course of the month. The ever famous June Swoon struck
the Bronx Bad Boys, they fell from second place to fourth, losing
a total of six games on first place. The Nine, while moving into
second place, gained some in percentage points, but gained no
games on the leader. The Butler Did Its went from five game under
to just a single game under five hundred-but this gained them
no games in the standings from last month. The Cornwolves had
the biggest wining percentage increase, gaining 48 points, but
they are still in last and harbor few hopes of making up ten games
on the Swedes.
Standings After May

In the Baker Division, Dyersville caught and passed
the Sox claiming first place after May. The Sox, for their part,
continue to play good ball and closed to within a half game at
the month's end. The Swedes take their impressive 20-8 home record,
the best in the league, to the lead of the Teacher Division. The
Un-friendly confines of roomy Griffith Stadium are conducive the
the Swedes league leading pitching staff, but also may lead to
the Swedes league worst hitting record. The Bad Boys also like
playing at home, with the second most home wins in the league
at Yankee stadium to their credit. As death valleys go, Sioux
City's Forbes Field is pretty impressive. Between them, the Swedes
and the Sox have the top 7 of the top 10 pitchers with the least
amount of home runs given up. The Iowa City Corn Wolves, when
they reversed their usual strategy of drafting homer hitters and
defense for an actual pitching staff, failed to take into consideration
Coors field. Oops! The poor Wolves have the worst era in the league.
Wonder if the park has anything to do with it? Oh well, Wolves
games are always exciting, even if they are in last place. The
league's most offensive team, Mudville Nine, continue to hover
within striking distance three games back. And poor little Moville,
with Sammy and company have one claim to fame, they lead the league
in homers by a last place team. Go Clowns!
Standings After April

In the Baker Division, the Silver Sox continued to
ride the wave of a fast start to take first place after April,
although a determined Dreams squad swept them to finish the month.
The Corkers kept pace as well, overcoming a early sweep at the
hands of the Swedes. Over in the Teacher Division, the Big Springs
Swinging Swedes followed up beating the Silver Sox to start the
season with a solid month, making up an early 2.5 game deficit
to finish the month tied for first. The Bronx Bad Boys played
a solid month as well, losing only four series and sweeping the
Dreams and Killer Clowns en route to capturing a tie for first.
In the spirit of creating lasting rivalries, the
schedule maker set up a three game series at the very beginning
of the season which pitted blood rivals against each other. The
Silver Sox played the Swinging Swedes, the Corkers hosted the
Did Its and the Nine took on the Dreams. The Iowa City Corn Wolves
were the odd Ericson out, so they challenged the Vermillion Vermin
to the Battle of the College Towns. This left the Boys to play
the "Beat the new guy" tournament with the Killer Clowns.
The results? The Swedes over the Sox and the Did Its
over the Corkers 2 games to 1, proving the old guys still know
their baseball. The Nine over the Dreams 2 games to 1, posting
a 17 to 6 shellacking in the final game as a exclamation point.
Take that Big Brother! The Vermin proved once again that USD kicks
ass by defeating the Corn Wolves 2 to 1. Finally, the BTNG tournament
was a rousing success with the Bad Boys taking the series 2 games
to 1 over the Killer Clowns-leaving Mark to wonder, what the Hell
is going on?
Outta The Gate!

Above are posted the results after the first 10 games.
Well, the first ten games for most of the teams anyway. The Sox
kinda snuck to a .714 winning percentage in their first 7 games
while the rest of the league had to play more games.
