UNIT PLAN: LA BELLE ET LA BETE

Context:

This version of the classic French tale, la Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast) is extremely user friendly equipped with English translation of unfamiliar and difficult words or phrases typed in the margins, and a mass of cognates. This classic tale provides a wonderful introduction to French culture. This version of the tale could be used for both beginners and more advanced French language learners. The activities concepts and activities I have designed, would be more appropriate for beginners. Each day/lesson will encompass one of the five skills, reading, writing, listening, speaking and culture, if not more. This version of the classic French tale, la Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast) is extremely user friendly equipped with English translation of unfamiliar and difficult words or phrases typed in the margins, and a mass of cognates. Day 1: Culture

Brainstorm about legends or tales, as a class.
Talk about classic American tales and legends.
Introduce and give background information about the author.
Talk about the 2 main categories of tales and legends: 1) tales of marvel 2) funny tales.

Day 2: Reading and Listening

Preview Activity on Culture: have students voluntarily give information learned from the previous class.

Read the story out loud to class. The students will have their own copy to follow along.
Discuss what category this tale falls into, and why.

Day 3: Reading and Speaking

Students will take turns reading the story aloud.
We will discuss each paragraph in English.
Special attention will be paid to cognate usage.

Day 4: Writing and Speaking

In pairs, students will write 3 true/false statements in French. (the story will be utilized as a reference for this activity).
The class will play a game using the questions the students designed.

Day 5: Writing

Preview Activity: Today we will discuss any comprehension questions students might have about the story.

Although there have been assessment tools throughout the unit, I would have a comprehension quiz. The quiz would be given in English with bonus points provided for words and phrases written in French. The quiz would focus on story comprehension, but would include information given from all 5 days.
