Betty's Bryce

“Bloop” was a tongue-in-cheek name given to images created from volume material in Bryce. In 3D applications volume material by itself is mapped to an object in a way that was different from the norm. The effect is to create an object which can appear more solid and more realistic. In a bloop, the effect of the volume material itself becomes the image.

These are all “bloops” and all panoramic renders. They all used variations of a material a friend, Steve sent me on an octahedron he would use for an abstract image, Butterfly. At the time, I needed a break from swearing at a sky I was trying to get to work right. The variations possible with this particular material, either by tweaking or by the object it was applied to, became fascinating.

In the two below, I stretched the original material along the y-axis by lowering the y frequency a bunch, and rotated the x and z some to get the first one. Butterfly was from tweaking a bit more, but both were still on the original octahedron. I didn’t see Steve’s Butterfly until I’d done my version. I liked his better, but don’t think this one was too bad either.

For these two I packed food, a thermos of coffee and a flashlight, and moved into Deep Texture Editor of Bryce for a couple of days. I multi-replicated a torus twice around the z-axis so the ‘flower’ part was pointed at the camera to apply the new material to. Experimented with the voronoi noises and got some KPT looking stuff. Really surprised me. Hence the very imaginative titles.

Finally I went back to the original octahedron and used the material from Surprise 2 to see what would happen. The ‘neon lights’ that appeared during the render of the first one made me think of pictures of Las Vegas. Well that’s the best reason I could come up with anyway..... Then I stretched and played with saw wave filter some more and got the last one. Fun, fun fun!!!
