Dr. Derek Ryter's Geology Page

Back

Greetings to my web site. Check out the images of geology and active tectonics in my field area of southern California (the central San Jacinto fault zone). My focus is neotectonics: tectonic geomorphology, structural geology and paleoseismology. I strive to integrate field mapping with GIS and spatial data analysis.

Digging soil profiles in the desert

A view northwest along the San Jacinto fault zone in southern California where I'm doing my dissertation research. This image was created using a Landsat TM image bands 4,2,7 draped over mosaicked USGS 30m DEMs. Faults that I've mapped and a road coverage were then overlain. The mountains on the left side of image are moving away from you and the mountains on the right are moving toward you. The Salton Sea is to the right (east) of the mountains on the right. The Borrego Badlands are in the center of the image.

This image is looking southeast along the Clark fault that has displaced the toe of an alluvial fan. The fan and area to the right are moving toward you. Faults are in red. This image is a USGS aerial photo draped over a 30m DEM. I am working on reconstructing the offset with a digital landscape model, and dating the offset using the soils on the surface of Lute Ridge.
