Nebraska Section ABPA Region 12 Conference March 4, 2004
This years conference went off without a hitch. Although the weather was a little nasty with a lot of snow on the way, the turn out was great. Some drove 200 miles or more to attend, what devotion!! The coffee and doughnuts were ready and the conference started. We broke the training into two groups this year, classroom and hands-on. Rich Koenig, Region 12 National Director and Field Representative for Nebraska Health and Human Services along with Doug Woodbeck, Program Manager of Field Services and Training brought everyone up to speed on Title 179 and answered questions pertaining to the changes.

Guest speakers for the classroom training included; Herb Scott from the Nebraska Environmental Training Center. Herbs department is responsible for providing training to wastewater facility operators and other personnel in environmentally related fields.

Tim O'Neal, Region 12 Treasurer , City of Gering Water Department and contact person for the Panhandle Chapter of Nebraska touched on new changes with the 2003/2004 International and Uniform Plumbing Codes Update.

Leroy Kramer Region 12, Vice-President and contact person for the Western Nebraska Chapter handled all the hands-on testing, device repair and troubleshooting in the wet area of the Ramada.

Jim Wonder, Omaha Plumbing Inspector covered proper sizing of assemblies and piping. A slideshow of the internal components and what can happen when various parts wear out or fail.

Bavco Master Parts Distributor, Jim Purzyki touched on the different types of test kits, how to properly use and take care of them. Also discussed some problems in the field and how to troubleshoot them.

Rich Koenig was presented the Preston Award by Tim O'Neal for excellence in promoting safe drinking water and furthering the cause of cross-connection control and backflow prevention in the four state region of ABPA Region 12. The award is named after the late Tom Preston. Tom was instrumental in starting the Cedar Rapids Cross-Connection Control Program back when the need was known, but not much else was known about cross-connection control. Tom was influential in making Region 12 the best ABPA Region. We choose to recognize those few people who go above and beyond the call of duty to make this world a little better than what they were given.
