The Eastern Nebraska Chapter of Backflow Prevention held it's Annual Fall Training Seminar at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha on October 11th 2005. Nebraska Health and Human Services Regulation and Licensure granted 3 re-certification hours for Grade 6 Operators and 1 hour for Grades 1-4.

The class was held at the Campus Utilities Plant and it was at full occupancy, 42 people attended WOW!!! What an attendance. 23 people from Lincoln, 17 from the Omaha area and 2 from the ever faithful Nebraska City. Three attendants carried multi-grade licenses. This is dedication folks!! The Chapter would also like to recognize 6 new members that enlisted tonight.

We had some minor technical difficulties when the air conditioning and sound system decided to stop working, but we worked through it.

Our guest speakers for the night were Bob Jedlicka- Mack McClain, on the subject of "The Dangers Of  A Closed Loop System", Jim Bewley of the  Metropolitan Utilities District covered how to properly fill out the backflow test result form, Jim Wonder-Chief Plumbing Inspector for the City of Omaha and backflow instructor presented testing procedures and troubleshooting on different devices. Terry Vail-Master Plumber with UNMC gave a PowerPoint presentation on proper protection from Dialysis Equipment.

Training concluded with hands on in the wet area and certificates were handed out.

I would like to thank our guest speakers for giving up their time and hard work they put into the training for our operators. I would also like to thank the University of Nebraska Medical Center for hosting this training seminar, Terry Vail and his Staff for handling all the logistics. What an outstanding job!!

Letter From The Chapter Secretary: I would encourage and challenge all Chapter Members and Operators to spread the word about our training and opportunities to serve on the Board of Directors or as a Chapter Officer. I would also challenge all present members to each bring in a new Chapter Member or Guest. This Chapter is growing and going in the right direction and it is you the Members, Directors and Officers that make it happen. We are also looking forward to the installation of a new Chapter in the Omaha area. Christy Christiansen of the Papillion Water Department is taking this challenge head on with the help of this Chapter and Region 12. With the addition of a new Chapter this will allow more avenues for training / hours and shorten drive time which is a major concern with all operators. The move for a new Chapter will only enhance our ability to ensure that all operators get the training they deserve and to make this organization a second to none operation.

The Eastern Nebraska Chapter of Backflow Prevention held it's Spring Training Seminar at the Bob Devaney Sports Center at Lincoln NE. on the 19th of April 2005. Nebraska Health and Human Services granted 3 re-certification hours for Grade 6 Operators and 1 hour for Grades 1-4.

Registration began at 5:30 pm and training began promptly at 6:00 pm

We had an excellent turn out with 38 attendants, including the City of Lincoln Chief Plumbing Inspector Bob Siemsen and his staff of plumbing inspectors. John Dahlgen of the Lincoln Water System Operations Center covered the proper way to fill out test result forms and was available to aid with hands-on testing.

We also heard from Justin Daniel of the Lincoln Lancaster County Health and Human Services Department about health issues related to backflow and cross-connections. Justin presented a very interesting power point presentation about the food service industry and the types of cross-connections and incidents that his staff have encountered in the field.

Guest speaker and Grade 6 Operator Tail Vail of the University of Nebraska Medical Center Omaha gave some instruction on the proper backflow protection required on dialysis equipment

Chapter President Phil Hood broke the members into groups and assigned different areas of the sports center to them. When testing was completed and test result forms handed in, members received their certificate of attendance.

I would like to thank Chapter President Phil Hood for the use of the Devaney Sports Center to further the education of the members and attending operators and also to our guest speakers, John Dahlgren, Justin Daniel and Terry Vail.

A motion was made by Butch Lottman to have the chapter fund the mailing expenses for a flyer and membership application to all grade 6 operators in a seven county area north and east of Lincoln Nebraska that are not presently members. There are 490 grade six operators in these areas that are potential members. The motion was voted on and passed. Butch will draw up the flyer and explain why we want you as a member, our goals, benefits and training.

The membership was also asked about funding to send a representative from our chapter to the National ABPA Conference to accept the PACE award that we have been nominated for. The members spoke and decided to have the Vice President of ABPA Rich Koenig except the award on the Chapters behalf since he is a member of the Eastern Nebraska Chapter.

The Eastern Nebraska Chapter of Backflow Prevention and the Lincoln Water System held additional Grade 6 training at the North 27th Street Operations Center on January 12, 2005. Two re-certification hours were authorized by the State of Nebraska HHS for Grade 6 Operators.

The reason for training is the Lincoln Water System is handing over the testing of backflow assemblies to the private sector. To test in the City of Lincoln Nebraska you must be bonded with the City, hold an active Grade 6 license, and have proof that the test kit that is being used has been certified calibrated. All these components must be on file with the Lincoln Water System Operations Center.

The scope of training involved the correct and proper way to fill out the backflow test result form that is required by the City of Lincoln Nebraska." Hands On Training" was held in the vehicle bay area and the Lincoln Water System Staff were on hand to answer questions and give advice as to how their new system will work and what is expected of testers that are registered with the City of Lincoln. All technicians were required to test and fill out the form properly to pass the training.

Many new faces and companies were present at the seminar, which is very encouraging. I feel that the Chapter is moving in a positive direction and membership is increasing. I look forward to having your input, participating on the Board of Directors, and or serving as a Chapter Officer.

Butch Lottman, President Eastern Nebraska Chapter of Backflow Prevention and Region 12 Nebraska Director.
