Welcome to DXing!
World-wide communications, world-wide fun

If you are a "DXer", it simply means that you like talking to people over very long distances. Of course, what constitutes "long distance" depends upon your working conditions and the propogation characteristics of the frequency band you are on. On HF frequencies, and under average working conditions, for US hams DX usually refers to stations outside of the United States and Canada.

Working DX doesn't mean you have to have an expensive station or large antennas. During sunspot maxima, with five watts, a dipole and a little dedication, you can easily contact the 100 countries you need to earn the DX Century Club Award.

Some people hunt DX just to get their country totals up. Others simply enjoy making friends in other parts of the world. Some are interested in collecting certificates and awards ("wallpaper") or QSL cards from exotic places. For many, the fact that you can talk to someone in Siberia or Australia on less power than it takes to run a single household lightbulb...and without the multi-million dollar infrastructure of the Internet or commercial telecommunications industry...still holds tremendous fascination. Whatever your interests, DXing has something to offer.

There is probably more information on the Internet about DXing than any other Amateur Radio topic. Some of our favorite links are listed below. You can find additional links on the Other Links page. These links, and the pages they lead to, will let you dig to any depth you please, but for a quick introduction to DXing, browse our LARC DX pages!
