AIRSPEED INDICATOR

DESCRIPTION

The pilot and gunner airspeed indicators, located on respective instrument panel, are standard pitot-static instruments. The single-scale indicator provides airspeed indication of 20 to 250 knots by measuring differences between impact air pressure from the pitot tube and atmospheric pressure from the static pressure ports.

AIRSPEED OPERATING LIMITS  100% RPM

SECTION  V. AIRSPEED LIMITS
a. Refer to Figure 5-3 for forward airspeed limits.
b. Sideward flight is 35 knots.
c. Rearward flight limit is 30 knots.
d. Maximum steady-state airspeed with SCAS OFF is 100 knots. With the SCAS inoperative and at an airspeed in excess of 100 KIAS, uncommanded roll, pitch and yaw oscillations will occur. The magnitude of the oscillation will increase as airspeed increases. Due to the nature of the oscillation, there is a tendency to introduce pilot induced oscillations which further aggravate the condition. Additionally, high power settings should be avoided when operating at airspeeds between 60 and 100 KIAS with inoperative roll and yaw SCAS channel because of instability.
e. Maximum steady-state autorotational airspeed is 120 knots.
f. Maximum airspeed for TOW missile firing is 150 knots.
g. Sideward flight is limited to 25 knots with 0 to 35 knots forward airspeed when firing BGM-71D TOW 2 and BGM-71E TOW 2A missiles.
h. Airspeed limit for indicated torque greater than 88.0 percent is 100 KIAS.       Airspeed limit for indicated torque greater than 62.5 percent is 150 KIAS.
CANOPY DOOR LIMITATIONS.
The canopy door can be opened only if engine RPM is at ground idle.
