I'm convinced that this crane must have been a border guard in a former life, he wasn't about to let us pass without a thorough inspection. With their long beaks and bright eyes, they make imposing birds up close. THis is definitely a different experience of the Sandhill Crane than one gets during their migration, where they intimdate by sheer numbers rather than by a penetrating gaze.
