Diocese of Lincoln Schools
Education Technology Initiative
April 1, 2004
Mission
To enable the students, teachers, and administrators to reach even higher levels of academic achievement, the Diocese of Lincoln Education Office created an Education Technology Initiative to provide schools with a uniform action plan for deploying and infusing education technology into their curriculum and instruction.
Technology Standards
On December 1, 2003, Superintendent of Schools Fr. John Perkinton directed schools to comply with the following technology standards (which were first seen in October, 2000).
- Local area network (LAN) managed by Microsoft Windows NT servers or later, including necessary client access licenses.
- Local area network cabling provided and installed by contractor selected by Diocesan Education Office
- Properly licensed Microsoft Windows operating system and client access licenses on workstations and notebooks/laptops; follow Education Office procedures for purchasing and documenting these licenses
- Use of IBM and IBM Compatible (Wintel) computers (CPUs) and displays/monitors.
- Microsoft Office 97 or later productivity software.
- Adequate electrical service to computer lab, network servers, and classrooms
- Provide Internet connection from communications company/Internet service provider selected in conjunction with the Education Office, including firewall, anti-virus and spam protection, as well as web content filtering as mandated by the Childrens Internet Protection Act requirements (CIPA).
- Student use of Internet resources/services actively monitored by faculty and staff as mandated by CIPA
- Administration, faculty and staff model and teach Internet safety strategies to students
- Identify one "willing to learn" school staff member as the primary "day-to-day," "first line of defense" technology support person and when possible make him/her available for periodic training.
- Continued development of a formal plan for handling ongoing support within your school to address anticipated support incidents for hardware and software; agree to consult with the Education Technology Team prior to purchase of new hardware/software services, including the acceptance of donated technology items.
Benefits of Participation in Education Technology Fund
In addition to the technology standards set forth for all schools, Fr. Perkinton, with support from Diocese of Lincoln school benefactors, established an Education Technology Fund from which Diocesan schools which agree to established conditions of participation and future financial responsibilities, are eligible to realize the following benefits.
- Inclusion in Diocesan Wide Area Network (WAN), including firewall, anti-virus and spam protection.
- Local area network (LAN) managed by Microsoft Windows NT servers or later, including necessary client access licenses; moving towards Microsoft Server2000.
- Internet connection with e-mail and World Wide Web access, including web content filtering as mandated by the Childrens Internet Protection Act requirements (CIPA).
- Computer Lab complete with the following:
- PIII or better workstations running Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Office XP software or later and all necessary client access licenses;
- One multi-media authoring workstation with scanner and cd-rw drive;
- SmartBoard interactive whiteboard with SynchronEyes instructional and lab management software.
- One networked PIII or better workstation for each classroom teacher running Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Office XP or later and all necessary client access licenses.
- At least one networked Pentium-class student-use workstation in each classroom loaded with at least Microsoft Windows 98 SE operating system, Microsoft Office 97 software and all necessary client access licenses; goal is to provide minimum of PII-class workstations for student use.
- Sufficient networked PIII or better workstations for use by administrative office(s) loaded with Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system, Microsoft Office XP or later software and all necessary client access licenses.
- Ongoing support from the Diocesan Education Technology Team.
- Training opportunities for teachers and administrators in the effective use of provided hardware and software.
- Software and Hardware standardization incentives; provide matching funds and purchasing assistance to implement and maintain technology standards in both hardware and software.
- School web site development and/or hosting services.
- School/student information system and electronic gradebook software, including implementation and support from the Education Technology Team; secure for faculty and parent access to school/student information via World Wide Web.
Conditions of Participation in Education Technology Fund
In addition to the Technology Standards outlined above, those schools wishing to benefit from the Education Technology Fund agree to:
- Pay monthly Internet connection charge from communications company and Internet service provider selected in conjunction with the Education Office. These charges are affected by capacity of data connection service selected and distance from communications company connection points. See attached Appendix A.
- Channel all requests for technical support through defined Technical Support Request Process.
