PLEASE WATCH............This is a Jim Jacobi mini documentray. Roger Mah from Rhino records is doing an article about “Victims” and “Police State” (1977-1980) He says “I’ve interviewed plenty of bands over the years. I am happy to report that everyone I spoke with regaurding  the crap detectors only had complimentary things to say about you. Which is highly unusual in my experience.”

history

CHUNK-A-RUNKUS     All the incarnations of Jacobi’s bands were guitar oriented bands..Though the 1st Lincoln,Ne. bands were experiments, the Texas Crap Detectors began taking on a new sound with extended guitar solos accompanying the music which could be rock-a-billy-punk-ska-jazz. In Seattle some UW students wrote a poem and gave it to Jacobi at the now parking lot, LAKE UNION PUB. They described the music as CHUNK-A RUNKUS.  It was on the back of a radio shack receipt and said “The punk rock guitar metal feels like nothing but the flavors of bone-rage and shimmy/ These Hoosiers take a flip lolly and land it on it’s chunk-a-runkus. That would be it’s chunk-a -runkus. It is guitar-nastics.Check out the nightcourt across the room(suspenders). This music brings me to my knees. He’s got fingers like licorice whips.”

The Joe Jakimbi Band
Jim Jacobi played in a band with drummer Dave Robel in the early 1970's. Robel quit Jacobi's band to join with a rockabilly guy named Charlie Burton. While recording the second 45 with Charlie Burton and Rock Therapy, Robel sold a TEAC four channel machine to Jacobi, who recorded the first Crap Detector record Victims of the Media. The Crap Detectors moved on to Dallas and finally Seattle, WA. After releasing the final Crap Detector CD, Cat Patrol, in 1998 Jacobi hooked back up with Dave Robel and former Detector bassist Craig Kingery to form the Joe Jakimbi Band, based in Lincoln, NE.

The Crap Detectors
Jim Jacobi began the Crap Detectors in 1977 by recording all tracks (except drums played by Herb Hill) for a basement recording called Victims of the Media. This was followed by a 45 released in 1979 called Police State. The first live band was formed in 1980 which lead ot over 12 bands until 1998.   OMAHA--Moving there in 2005 Jacobi did a series of solo releases honing his skills as an engineer and total musician. The Crap Detectors returned in 2008 with the 30 year anniversary CD release.”It got too deep!” The format remained as the original Crap Detectors without Herb Hill. After another release with the name Crap detectors Jacobi began to look for pre existing bands to do a few live shows per year. He sat in with “The Firm” but because he played through another's equipment it sounded to distorted. They declined. Next he asked 2 members of “The backseat Deacons”  to play with him for 3 years. He was reminded by the drummer that the 3 years was up in 2013 and played his last gig with them. Unfortunately the bassist actually thought he was in the Crap Detectors and was showing up intoxicated at a few shows . He was the only person to make Jacobi ashamed of playing live.           In 2015 Jacobi reunited with the 1980-81  Crap Detectors for a show at the Zoo bar in Lincoln,Ne.

Garage rock is a raw form of rock and roll that was first popular in the United States and Canada from about 1963 to 1967. During the 1960s, it was not recognized as a separate music genre and had no specific name. In the 1970s, some critics referred to the style as punk rock, the first form of music to bear this description; although it is sometimes called garage punk, protopunk, or 1960s punk, the style has predominantly been referred to as garage rock.

n the 1980s, another garage rock revival saw a number of bands linked to the underground music scene earnestly trying to replicate the sound, style, and look of the 1960s garage bands, including The Chesterfield Kings, The Fuzztones and Lyres.[31] This trend coincided with a similar surf rock revival, and both styles fed in into the alternative rock movement and future grunge explosion, which some say was partially inspired by garage rock from the Tacoma area like The Sonics and The Wailers, but was largely unknown by fans outside the immediate circles of the bands themselves.[32]

This movement also evolved into an even more primitive form of garage rock that became known as garage punk by the late 1980s, thanks to bands such as The Nouns (Los Angeles, CA), The Gories,Thee Mighty Caesars, The Mummies and Thee Headcoats.[33] Bands playing garage punk differed from the garage rock revival bands in that they were less cartoonish caricatures of 1960s garage bandsand their overall sound was even more loud and raw, often infusing elements of protopunk and 1970s punk rock (hence the "garage punk" term). The garage rock revival and garage punk coexisted throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s with many independent record labels releasing thousands of records by bands playing various styles of primitive rock and roll all around the world.
