Harriet Elizabeth Beecher Stowe
"The little lady whose book started the Civil War"
When Abraham Lincoln first met Harriet Beecher Stowe, he said, "So you’re the little lady whose book started the Civil War." Many historians today believe that her book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, was one of the deciding factors to the start of the Civil War. In 1852 when her book was first published, the nation was already divided over the issue of slavery. Her book opened the eyes of many Northerners to the horrors of slavery.
There were many factors that influenced Harriet Beecher Stowe’s life and writing.
