Sin City

First off, I
just want to state for the record that although I am familiar with Frank
Miller's work, I have never read the
Sin City graphic novels. That being said, I have perused a couple of the
volumes at the University bookstore while waiting for class to start, and I will
more than likely be getting them all eventually. Now let's get on to what
I thought about the movie.
Two Words: Loved It!
Ok, so I will say a bit more about it... I REALLY LOVED IT!
All joking aside, from the very beginning of the movie it is just stunningly beautiful. The movie is done in black and white with splashes of color thrown in for artistic effect. The backgrounds of the scenes seem to be painted onto the frame which gives the movie a very surreal and comic book panel effect. The characters in the stories of Sin City are both unreal and believable and most of all compelling. This is one of the best examples of Film Noir that I have seen in a long time. Robert Rodriguez, one of the directors, obviously has an appreciation and love of the source material, that and the fact that Frank Miller also is a co-director, kept this as close to the source material as possible. Just a note about that, when I was looking at the graphic novels, certain key moments in the movie are taken verbatim and look exactly like they do in the novels. This attention to detail is just amazing.
Also the actors who portray the various denizens of Basin City are just amazing. The standout in this movie is barely recognizable, Mickey Rourke who plays Marv just blew me away. First of all, I could understand him, which is always a good thing. Secondly, he just captures the tortured soul of man who has done bad in his life, and now accused of a crime he didn't commit. The other standout in my opinion is Elijah Wood who just draws you in as the the silent cannibal Kevin. He is just plain spooky!
The movie is a bloody and funny movie, not laugh out loud funny, but there are moments where I just could help giggling. Especially when Stuka gets shot with an arrow! Overall I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who loves comics...That being said this movie is not for everyone, and definitely not for children. Anyway that is my Humble Opinion.
