Welcome to Adams County Iowa

My name is Roger Cox and I am the volunteer responsible for Adams County Iowa. I was born in Corning and lived in Adams County until 1976, when I moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. My relatives still live in Corning, and I still visit the area from time to time. My gg-grandfather Samuel Hardesty and his wife Maria helped to settle Adams County in the early 1850's, and my other Cox & McPherren ancestors settled in Adams County in the 1870's.

Adams County was created from Pottawattamie County in 1851, but was not fully organized until 1853.  The county seat is Corning.  Census records exist from 1860 to 1880 and 1900 to 1930.  The earliest state censuses for Adams County were taken in 1854 and 1856.  Adams County was named after John Adams, the second President of the United States.

Andres Knutson Ytrevoll (Andrew K. Anderson), in a party of nine, including his parents, siblings, his wife and two children departed Stavanger, Norway 10 May 1846 aboard the Brig Norden, arriving New York 15 July 1846. Andrew and his family first resided Norway, Mission Twp., LaSalle Co, Illinois, then to Norway in Benton Co., Iowa and on to Strand, Adams Co., Iowa. Three of his children: Andrew John Anderson and Ole Anderson and Sarah (Anderson) Lee married and raised their families near Strand in Lincoln and Douglas Twp's in Adams County. These three families stayed at Strand even though their father with his third wife and youngest children went on to Clark Co., Washington Territory, where he homesteaded- always looking for a "place that looked like Norway, "where he died at age 91. Some of the families - mostly the grandchildren of those three families moved away - altho quite a few still have Corning, Brooks, Nodaway, Prescott, Lenox, Red Oak and Villisca addresses.

In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project.  The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.  The IAGenWeb Project is an outgrowth of that original Kentucky project.

US GenWeb Logo County pages are hosted by volunteers who coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of their web pages. If you would like to contribute your information to this page, please let me know.  We would like to have biographical information on Adams County individuals as well as historical information about this area.
