ANNOUNCING the NEW ADAMS COUNTY MAILING LIST
September 20, 1998
You can now subscribe to the Adams County mailing list in mail mode by sending a message to IAADAMS-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word
subscribe
and nothing else in the text of the message. If you prefer digest mode, you should send the command instead to IAADAMS-D-request@rootsweb.com. To unsubscribe, send the word
unsubscribe
to IAADAMS-L-request@rootsweb.com (if in mail mode) or IAADAMS-D-request@rootsweb.com (if in digest mode.) To switch from one mode to the other, you should unsubscribe from one and then subscribe to the other. There is no "no mail" mode -- if you want messages to stop, then simply unsubscribe.
To post to both IAADAMS-L and IAADAMS-D, messages should be sent only to IAADAMS@rootsweb.com. Messages sent there will appear in both places for all subscribers to see.
The "digest mode" should only be used when the messages per day in the normal "mail mode" become excessive. The "digest mode" condenses all of one day's mail messages from the list into one large email message. For the first few months of the list, messages will be very minimal, perhaps from 1 to 10 messages per week. I would only recommend the "digest mode" if the messages ever exceed 5 per day or 35 per week.
A mailing list is very much like a query page on the web. Instead of posting your query to a web page, your query is sent by email to all subscribers of the mailing list. In the beginning of the list, there may only be a handful of subscribers, but later on there may be hundreds of subscribers, all with a common interest in researching the genealogy of Adams County, Iowa.
You may post a query to the list, or you may announce that you have certain resources for others to use, or you may just want to post a list of surnames that you are researching. You may also post reunion announcements and other items of general interest to Adams County. Other subscribers may reply to your posting, either directly to you or to the list as a whole. If the reply would be of interest to the whole list, I encourage you to "cc" the list address.
The only thing that I ask is that you do not send "flames" to the list or to others on the list. "Flames" are insulting or inflamitory statements or comments. Commercial advertisements and "spamming" is also highly discouraged. Also, please do not send extremely long messages or messages with file attachments to the list. There is a maximum size to the messages allowed by the mailing server. The Adams County mailing list is a closed list, so only subscribers may post messages to the list. If there are problems, I have the ability to manually add or delete subscribers to the list.
If you want to reply to messages sent to you by someone on the list, you may:
#1 will only send your reply to the person who originated the message. #2 will send the originator 2 copies of your reply and will send your reply to the entire list. #3 will send your reply to everyone who is currently subscribed to the list, including the originator.
Rootsweb maintains an archive of the messages sent through their server. You may search these messages by using the following: Search Mailing List Archives Use the name of the list (IAADAMS-L) when performing this search.
If anyone has additional questions, please ask.
Roger Cox, listowner
