The South African Family Cloete

The Cloete family in South Africa date back to 1657, when the progenitor, Jacob Cloete (Kloete, Kloet, Kloote, Kloeten) arrived in Cabo de Goede Hoop from Keulen (Cologne) in what is now Germany.

He became a free-burgher in the spring of 1657, on the 10th of August, and received a farm two months later (10th October)  from the Dutch East Indian Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compange, VOC), situated on the Liesbeeck river. By 1671 Jacob was not eager to remain at the Cape of Good Hope and repatriated to the Netherlands.  However he was soon back again, this time as a soldier, with the rank of Corporal. He was mysteriously murdered on the 23rd May, 1693.

The “stammoeder” of the Cloetes was Sophia Raedergortz (Fytje Raderootjes) "van Uts in 't land van Keulen" who arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1658, together with her brother, Peter, on the”Arnhem”.

Harry Booyens has done extensive work, published in various articles, which place Jacob as born in the city of Oedt, North of Ceulen.  This provides the following familial relationships:

Conrad & Catharina Klauten, baptized a son Jacob on 11 Nov 1630 in Oedt, Ceulen. He married as a catholic Sophia Raedergortz, on 31.5.1650 (Uetz, Ceulen).

This genealogy is a summary of genealogical research done over a very long period of time.  The bulk of the earlier information came from CG De Villiers (Geslagregisters der Oude Kaapsche Families), updated by C. Pama (De Villiers-Pama, Geslagsregister …).  A large addition was made by Heese and Lombaard (SA Genealogies, vol 1) and this was extended in a few branches by research in the Archives at Cape Town and Pretoria using the copies of church registers and the Death Notices of a selected few individuals.  The TANAP program has created a number of databases of transcriptions of MOOC documents from the Cape Archives, which were used to provide some extra information.  Thanks is also expressed to Dr. Keith Meintjies (Waterford, MI, USA), Marlies Keclik (Linz, Austria), Paul Duckitt (Darling, Cape), prof. Fanie Cloete (Stellenbosch) for providing information and corrections of an earlier version of this section.  A number of middle-19th century Cape Estates were recently examined through the wonderful online collections of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.

This first page contains the first four generations of Cloetes, and more extensive genealogies can be found by clicking on the indicated names in the “e” generation.
