Terms of Endearment |

Terms of Endearment began location filming in Lincoln, Nebraska in early 1983. The film was based on a novel by Larry McMurtry and focused on the love and conflict between a mother and daughter. It was during the location filming that actress Debra Winger became romantically involved with newly-elected Nebraska Gov. Bob Kerrey. The relationship provided plenty of fodder for local gossip and news media as the events of each day's shooting and photos of the new couple appeared in the newspapers on a regular basis. A Nebraska youth, Troy Bishop, was cast as Emma's oldest son, Tommy. |

The campus scenes were originally to have been filmed at Nebraska Wesleyan University, but after reading the script, which included some off-color language, officials of the Methodist university withdrew permission to use the campus in the film. Campus scenes were then filmed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln downtown campus. The film's world premiere was held at the Stuart Theater in Lincoln as a fundraising event for Lincoln General Hospital, one of the shooting locations for the film. Lisa Hart Carroll (Patsy) was the only one of the film's major stars to attend the Lincoln event. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and received five trophies, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Shirley MacLaine), Best Director (James L. Brooks), Best Supporting Actor (Jack Nicholson), and Best Writing (James L. Brooks). |
