Wesley Snipes as Noxeema, John
Leguizamo as Chi Chi and Patrick Swayze as Vida - on location in Loma, Nebraska
Production offices
were set up in Loma's empty church, and cast and crew made the 90-minute round trip from
their hotels in Lincoln every day. Loma's 23 residents, which included several children,
three dogs and a chicken or two, were all gracious hosts to a film company that turned
their peaceful lives upside down for three months. Even on Sundays, when no filming took
place, tourists came from all over the state to get a glimpse of the town that had
suddenly become famous.
Producer
G. Mac Brown went about securing permission from the local citizens to film in their town.
"We didn't lie about the film's content," he says, "but we didn't make a
point of saying these were homosexual men who liked to wear dresses. We drew parallels to
Robin Williams in 'Mrs. Doubtfire' and Dustin Hoffman in 'Tootsie.' And the locals said to
us, 'Oh, you mean drag queens?' 'Uh, yeah,' we said, 'that's what they're called.' They
were wholeheartedly in favor. And we had actually been a little worried at first!"
