Wesley Snipes as Noxeema and Alice
Drummond as Clara on location in Loma, Nebraska
Loma's dilapidated
appearance was exactly what Wynn Thomas was seeking to contrast with the glittery opening
scenes in New York. "In this film, we've aimed for a sort of reverse of the scheme
that was used in The Wizard of Oz," he explains. "New York is our Emerald City,
so it's our opening that has that wild, dazzling Technicolor look. As Vida, Noxeema and
Chi Chi leave New York and head into the heartland, the color palette begins to drain out
and, by the time they reach Snydersville, things look very monochromatic. It isn't until
the Strawberry Social that color comes back into the film in a big way."
As Thomas and his crew began constructing the few extra façades that would
complete Loma's transformation to Snydersville, costume designer Marlene Stewart was
devising the costumes that would be worn by the three stars.
