Panama man pleads
no contest in shooting of brother
By Mark Mahoney
A Panama
man accused of allegedly trying to kill his brother pleaded no contest to first-degree
assault in district court Thursday, September 25.
The charge of being a felon or fugitive in possession of a deadly weapon stood, but
the murder charge was downgraded to first-degree assault and the other two charges were
dropped, according to court records. Eric
Letsch was scheduled to be sentenced on November 24.
Aaron Letsch, then 19, had been shot with a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun
in the basement of his familys home. He suffered a non-life-threatening wound to the
left side of his torso and was later treated at a Lincoln hospital and released.
Authorities discovered him in a barn on his familys property a little over
three hours later, and they took him into custody, accused of trying to kill his younger
brother.
