Theft and vandalism occur at Apache Camper Center

By Mark Mahoney

Apache Camper Center near U.S. Highway 77 and Saltillo Road didn’t have a good May.

During the past week and a half, the RV business has been the victim of crime twice. On May 31, a Camper Center employee reported that three Goodyear tires had been stolen sometime between 8:20 a.m. May 27 and 2 p.m. May 31; the loss was estimated at $750. According to sheriff’s reports, they were attached to the backs of matching Jayco fifth-wheel camper trailers, which were facing Highway 77 and were in the farthest row to the east.

The employee reported that he had last seen the spare tires on May 27. According to sheriff’s reports, evidence at the scene indicated that the tires were probably stolen before it rained May 29.

On May 27, the same employee reported that over Memorial Day weekend, between May 23 and 27, someone damaged 13 fifth-wheel campers on the lot. According to sheriff’s reports, the campers’ door handles were pulled open, causing the door buttons to break for an estimated $650 in damage. No one gained entry to any of the campers.

Video surveillance showed a white pickup entering the lot on May 23 around midnight and left about 10 minutes later, according to sheriff’s reports. No people were seen on the tape.

Earlier this month, overnight between May 14 and 15, 10 campers were broken into and there was an estimated $2,050 in damage to the doors, which were pried open, according to sheriff’s reports. A 20-inch LCD TV and DVD player were taken from one of the campers; also stolen were a handful of walkie-talkies, a DVD stereo system and a second DVD player, according to sheriff’s reports. Total loss was estimated at $1,925.

The cases are under investigation and believed to be not only related to each other, but also to recent crimes at RV and camper businesses in Lincoln, Stebbing said.
