Betty J. Schroeder

Betty Jean Schroeder, 84, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Friday, May 2, 2008, in Mason City, Iowa. Funeral service for Betty was held at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake on May 5. Betty’s cremated remains will be buried in the Holland Cemetery in Holland on August 30 at 10:30 a.m. A nephew, the Rev. Daniel K. Schroeder, is in charge of the committal service.

Born October 4, 1923, in rural Holland, the daughter of Berend and Theresa (Drent) Lefferdink. Attended rural country school and graduated from Panama High School. Attended Wesleyan University in Lincoln. Worked for the State of Nebraska as an IBM operator. Married Ralph Schroeder on May 12, 1945, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Taught High School in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Returned to Nebraska in 1946.

Traveled to and lived in: Duluth, Munich, Germany, Chicago, Rockford, Illinois, and finally, Clear Lake, Iowa due to husband’s job. Retired in Clear Lake.

Enjoyed entertaining, bridge club. Volunteered in relation to husband’s work. Also enjoyed music, traveling with her husband, but most of all loved her family and was most generous with everyone.

Member of Zion Lutheran, helped establish special programs for the elderly. Was the organist at the Reformed Church in Holland for two years, 13 years at Good Shepherd in Rockford, Illinois, and for many years active in Small Groups at Zion in Clear Lake.

Survivors: husband, Ralph, children, Ralph (Deborah) Schroeder, Holland, Michigan, Reg (Kathy) Schroeder, Omaha, Randy (Jean) Schroeder, Holland, Michigan, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, her sisters, Evelyn Lefferdink, and Crystal Sterk, of Denver, Colorado, and Gladys DeVries, of Aurora, Colorado, a sister-in-law, Bernice Lefferdink, of Ft. Collins, Colordo, niece and many cousins living in the area.

Preceded in death by: brothers, Glen and Vernon Lefferdink.
