Marvin Odvody, Sr.

Marvin Odvody Sr., 70, Crete, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Born in Friend on June 22, 1939, to Emil Sr. and Emma (Buzek) Odvody.

Attended Possum Hill Country School District #77, graduated from Wilber High School in 1957 and played in Alumni Czech Band. Joined Army National Guard, was called to active duty at Fort Carson, Colorado, in 1961 and served until 1965. Married Helen Prokop on January 12, 1960, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Lived on farm until it was destroyed by fire two years ago. Had large dairy herd of cattle and raised crops and other livestock. Worked in construction and at Garber’s Honda and Farmland. Enjoyed farmer’s markets. Proud of his Czech heritage and enjoyed playing in several polka bands, including The Happy Czechs. Honored last year at Czech Days with Knights of Blanik for his support of his Czech heritage. Member, The Polka Lover’s Club of Omaha, WFLA Lodge Milligan #76 and Dorchester American Legion Post #264.

Survived by: wife, Helen, Crete; children and spouses, Marvin Jr. and Xuan, Crete; Judy and Brian Florian, Wilber; Ernie and Roylene, Crete; Perry and Juana, Wilber; brother and wife, Emil Jr. and Doris Odvody, Wilber; several grandchildren and step-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Harold Renken, York; Lorene and Gene Horky, Crete; Elaine and Ron Vlasin, Crete; Larry Prokop, Plymouth; Nancy Lase, Lincoln; Bonnie and Allen Brandt, Martell; Jim and Deb Prokop, Crete; Don and Mavone Prokop, New Brighton, Minnesota; Mary Ann and Jerry Morris, Sterling, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and host of relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by: daughter-in-law, Windi Odvody; and sisters-in-law, Janice Hand and Kathy Prokop.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 27, at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete with the Rev. Roger Wolfe officiating. Honor guard by Dorchester American Legion Post #264. Interment: North Fork Cemetery, rural Western. Memorials directed to family in lieu of flowers.
